More than just a sporting event

During their secondments, Kate Bland and Kat Simms worked with LOCOG’s Culture, Ceremonies, Education and Live Sites team to make the cultural events a reality.

On the culture side, we’ve helped get the UK’s biggest arts organisations on board for the four-year London Cultural Olympiad.

We have advised on co-operation agreements between LOCOG and the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Tate and the National Portrait Gallery, which entailed setting out conditions that include responsibilities for funding, marketing arrangements and licence agreements for using the London 2012 brand.

We’ve also helped negotiate the arrangements for the network of Live Sites being established in more than 20 towns and cities throughout the UK and looked at visa issues for overseas participants in the Cultural Olympiad.

A key component was working out the structural and contractual relationships for London 2012 Ceremonies Ltd, a bespoke consortium established to deliver production services for the ceremonies.

The Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games is watched by around 4bn people. I don’t think I’ll ever be involved in a project that has this scale of influence again! Kat Simms, Associate
