Our approach to training

Our graduate recruits begin their career with us with a week-long induction course introducing them to the practical aspects of being a Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer lawyer in Spain.

Graduate recruits pass through a two-year initial phase with us during which they will spend a period in each of our principal departments in Spain – corporate; finance; antitrust, competition and trade; tax; real estate; dispute resolution; employment, pensions and benefits; and IP/IT. They are expected to form an integral part of the team and to be fully involved in client work. This practical training is supplemented by a programme of internal seminars aimed specifically at recent recruits.

More experienced recruits attend a new managers course in London shortly after their arrival with us. This is aimed at introducing them to the firm, its systems and working practices.

We hold regular internal seminars for all our lawyers and encourage them to attend external conferences relevant to their areas of practice.

Our lawyers in Spain attend regular international practice conferences. The conferences are useful not only from a technical point of view but also as a valuable opportunity to meet colleagues from other offices working in the same field of expertise.

The recruitment process

Our main graduate recruitment drive takes place once a year. It comprises:

  • presentations on the firm by partners and associates at selected Spanish universities;
  • selection of candidates from applications received;
  • first interview by telephone to assess general suitability and level of English;
  • second interview in person to meet the candidate;
  • selected candidates attend a formal presentation with partners and associates;
  • candidates are interviewed personally based on a detailed case study to assess technical ability and legal analytical skills; and
  • the final selected candidates are interviewed by partners.

We are happy to receive applications at any time of year from those who have the skills and qualifications to operate as part of our Madrid or Barcelona teams. We seek not only recruits at graduate level but also experienced corporate, finance, tax, property and litigation lawyers.

We are looking for lawyers who, in addition to Spanish, have a high level of English. They should have good academic results and analytical minds capable of assessing a situation from a legal point of view and structuring their response to a client in an ordered way.
