Experience

Julia Sommer has been a counsel since March 2008 and works in our Duesseldorf office. She is a member of our intellectual property and information technology (IP/IT) practice group and specialises in administrative law, in particular telecommunications and media law including the European law aspects.

Julia participated, among others, in transactions regarding telecommunications networks and other infrastructure related projects, in the acquisition of the major broadband cable networks in Germany, the acquisition of a German broadcaster, as well as in various proceedings before the Federal Network Agency (formerly Regulatory Authority for Telecommunications and Postal Services) and respective court proceedings including the European Court of Justice. She was active in drafting and negotiating several contracts on telecommunications, media and energy services and advised a major German gas supplier with regard to an online auction of gas. In 2004, she was working for five months in the Brussels office on competition law matters.

Julia was born in 1969. She completed her legal education at the universities of Hamburg, Geneva and Heidelberg. Julia then entered the Max-Planck-Institute for Comparative Public Law and Public International Law as a research assistant and obtained the degree of doctor of law (Dr iur) from the University of Heidelberg for her theses on European law. In 2005, she earned a master of laws (LLM) degree from the Nottingham Trent University, U.K, which she pursued alongside her work as a lawyer. Julia was a trainee at the German Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo, at the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington and New York and at the United Nations Environment Programme in Geneva. Before joining our firm she worked for one year for a local law firm in Dresden, representing municipalities and the local government. She is the author of several publications in telecommunications and administrative law.

Julia joined the firm in 2000. She speaks German, English and French.
